Calling all students!

Drug Science is very excited to announce the launch of the Drug Science Student Society. The Drug Science Student Society is a student-led group which aims to provide evidence-based education on all psychoactive substances. Historically, political interference has prevented evidence-based drug policy from guiding decisions in law, social care and medicine.

Drug use continues to rise year on year. It is for this reason that the healthcare professionals of tomorrow need evidence-based information on psychoactive substances. We were initially inspired to create this society by looking at the global social harms of the ‘War on Drugs’ and the need to know more about the novel applications of ‘recreational’ drugs in healthcare. We at Drug Science believe that doctors and scientists have an obligation to provide the safest and best possible care for patients.

However, the need for objective, evidence-based drug science spans further than just healthcare professionals. The illegality of many drugs has prevented much-needed research, which could provide life-changing treatments for patients. The current classification of psychoactive substances creates challenging legal, political and socioeconomic issues that impact multiple disciplines. It is vital that lawyers, policy influencers, economists and various other academics are informed of the latest developments as they happen, but also, that they use this information to take the conversation further within their respective fields.

Throughout the year we will be hosting interesting talks from drug addiction to the therapeutic application of ‘recreational’ drugs, and a space to generate discussion. Whatever your views, you should have the opportunity to voice them and have access to the latest academic research.

Our expert-given talks will focus on these centralised themes:

  1. The impact of the War on Drugs on population welfare and harm reduction strategies

  2. Ongoing research on the therapeutic application of psychoactive substances

  3. Using newly approved drugs in healthcare settings (such as cannabis-based medicinal products)

  4. Drug Science eLearning materials

The Drug Science Student Society will host talks from experts in their fields using Drug Science educational resources to provide tutorials, we want to ensure that tomorrow’s students have the tools to engage with novel applications of recreational drugs, emerging therapeutics and harm reduction strategies. If you are interested in setting up your own student chapter, please email – students@drugscience.org.uk and sign up to our student newsletter below!
